Consecutive interpreting

“Consecutive” Means Subsequent

Consecutive interpreting is performed when the speaker makes his speech separated into parts (sequences) and he subsequently provides the interpreter with a space in which to transfer each sequence into the target language. The length of sequences is usually from three to five minutes. First, the interpreter listens to the speech of the speaker, makes some notes during listening (interpreter’s records) and subsequently he/she interprets the text.

Unilateral (one directional)

Unilateral interpreting is used only for a uni-directional communication, where the speaker speaks and the audience only listens (lecture of a foreign scientist). In practice, the interpreter interprets only from English to Slovak and not vice versa.

Bilateral (both directions)

This is interpreting where the interpreter works in both directions within the language combination. The interpreter provides the interpreting from his/her mother tongue to the foreign language and vice versa. Bilateral interpreting is used in particular for business negotiations, where both parties need to express and understand each other.
